The Polygamists, 2010
Male and female members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS) dress very modestly, even when swimming. Here Verda Shapely climbs atop her sisters to reach for a cable that the family uses as a zip line.
For Sinclair this image is very representative of the FLDS community. “So much about what they do is based on their religion. It’s not just polygamy, but the way they dress, how they make a living, the way they eat, and the way they spend their time. I really enjoyed being there and I thought it was a really, appropriate photograph for them and for the way I saw them,” she says. “There’s so much to learn from every community that’s different from ours.”
