Baghdad After the Storm, 2011
On a bridge over the Tigris River, a man feeds gulls at dawn as water taxis await the morning's first passengers. Addario made this image while on assignment to cover Baghdad after the end of the war. It was the first time she’d returned to Iraq in about six years, a prospect she initially met with some trepidation.
“I was pleasantly surprised by what had happened since I left,” she recalls. “There were people on the streets and ice cream parlors were full and families were out for a walk. I hadn’t seen that since early 2003 when it was still relatively safe, before bombs and kidnappings started to take over the country. It was exhilarating for me to go back to a country that I had left in complete disarray and there was life returning.”
