Sami - The People Who Walk With Reindeer, 2011

For Larsen this portrait of fourteen-year-old Ella-Li Spik epitomizes the Sámi concept of light and dark, “They have the light and the dark reindeer and they have the light and the dark seasons. And Ella-Li was always full of light...her hair and her skin, but also her inner glow as well was quite light and jovial.”

Ella-Li described the scarf she donned for the photograph as what the young Sámi wear. She is part of the small percentage of Sámi who grow up herding reindeer. "I want to explore the world," she says, "but I always want reindeer to be part of my life." Many in the younger generation have embraced modern technology even as they stay connected to their ancestral roots, often sharing pictures of their herd on Facebook.
