To guide their decision-making, some Kyrgyz seek out shamans to read their fortune with cards. United by a belief of powerful unseen spirits, shamanism takes different forms. Some in Central Asian countries where Islam predominates infuse their shamanistic rites with the mystic traditions of Sufism. In Siberia and Mongolia, the practice has merged so closely with local Buddhist traditions that it is often difficult to tell where one ends and the other begins.
